Diet

Are slimming clinics effective? Do they do anything for you that a regular gym workout doesn’t? How do they work?

    Nopes
My ex-ex had gone through it I think a year back. Some 6K down the line she had to look really really hard to see where it had made the difference and the diet was even worse. She switched tracks some 8 months back, quit drinking, started eating healthier and working out regularly and it worked like a charm.

I did a story on VLCC long ago when i was with Zee! They plug u on to machines for an hour or so. Then they give you terrible diets to follow. I got to speak to some of their clients then, and they said it worked for them. Since VLCC handpicked the clients we could talk to, i don't know if its true.
But recently, a dietician friend joined VLCC, and she said, "Why pay so much, when you can diet, exercise and lose the weight?"!
She didn't recommend it highly, even though she worked there.

So essentially, they take your money and use it as a guilt factor to convince you to stick to the resolutions they recommended you?

Its like these fancy gyms. They start by saying, "See Madam, you need to lose 20 kilos. But we'll start with 10 first. 15K for that."

It's all just a money making business. You leave guilty, and you're willing to pay up that money and stick to the plan coz they have told you that you need to lose 20 kilos.

No idea about slimming clinics, but choosing the right diet would be a good thing. (Earlier, I managed to lose a lot of flab like that.) I'd suggest going to a dietitian.

When you hand over so much money, your wallet is much lighter.

    It's a guaranteed weight loss programme. ;)

I don't know how these slimming clinics work, but my reason for working out (when I do) is more than just for looking good. A body workout also works on my mind: I feel more confident and more energetic overall. Going to a gym is also a good way to socialise and meet new people.

good diet and work out will work out.. I had infact lost more than 10Kgs. and as manish said gyming is refreshing. Infact, if you push yourself for more than a month-two, you get addicted to it.

My friends have had bad experiences at the 'fancy' slimming clinics. Quite effective to start with, heavy diet regulations and difficult to stick to them for long.
I feel that if you can chalk out an exercise plan from a fitness expert, a regular gym would be far better. I prefer walking, jogging or cycling to a conventional gym ofcourse with a plan and diet in mind.

    Stay away...
I lost 10 kgs in 2 months in a gym. Have stopped gyimming after the fracture, but do cycle regularly so that I stay there and dont gain extra. Incidently it was 2kms running and 3-5kms cycling which took the credit for weight loss. I didnt even do much diet control, except for stopped eating junk food regularly(didnt give it up altogether too)

I was 2kg overweight when i started gymming.

I went to gym for 3 months straight and used to do a intensive workout for 1-1.5 hrs. It worked. I lost 4 inches but only a kilo of weight(may be mecause of increased bone weight).

The diet was simple. Drink a glass of honey and lemon juice with warm water once a day. Then have 2 roti's one cup rice everytime you eat(3 times a day). Eat lots of curries, fruit. Stay away from milk products as much as you can.

i stopped doing this 2 months back. Though i did not follow the diet seriously, it worked well in the end. Also stop eating junk food.

    Some may benifit
I know of one of my colleague who went to such clinic and lost more than 20 KG. I went to US and could not recognize her when I returned after a year. I know she had to workout for 2 hours a day and eat very less (2 small chapati for lunch). I am not sure how clinic helped her. May be their instructions made her not to fall sick...
