BitTorrent: A more appropriate name would be BitTrickle.

Hmmm? Every torrent takes time to pick up speed - but it also depends on the seeders.

I typically get a completely saturated 384 kbps link when I download using BT.

I've never had such luck. Rarely over 3 kB/s, and for a less popular download, maybe 50 bytes per second.

Maybe your ISP is throttling the BitTorrent specific ports, try changing them.

True. My Sify Broadband guy first throttled my eMule connections. Later he closed those ports itself. Now, I'm using Bittorrent instead.

If you are behind a NAT you need to forward the specific ports to the machine you are running BT on.

I've seen speeds up to 32 kB/s (dowlonad) on my 256kbps DataOne connection! Guess it depeds on the ISP and maybe even the area.

I agree 100% for popular download the link rapidly gets saturated - for less popular downloads I depended on Kaaza but that has been blocked by my ISP now - or rather he fiddled with something and Kaaza no longer works and he does not know what went wrong!!

It all depends on what you download, where you download from, and your ISP. I've got speeds of 1kbps to 300+kbps.

my bad...I meant that in the bittorrent introduction it says that it is different from p2p softwares like Ares or Kazaa....the latter being my preferred engines.

    Forward your ports Luke...
    'Allo.

I use BT on both a DataOne and an Airtel DSL connection. On the Airtel connection, as it is a USB modem, BT works out of the box.

On the DataOne, you need to set up port forwarding for BT to *really* work. And it does!

Try http://www.portforward.com for your specific router. Oh, and use Azureus http://azureus.sourceforge.net/ as your client. It fair rocks! Makes sure you have Java 1.5 too...

    Parting words...Google is your friend.
