Friends on LiveJournal and Orkut

David Weinberger brings up this example of a very narrow definition of a friend, like on LiveJournal or Orkut, but taken from real life.

Newsweek on Asia’s urban explosion

From Newsweek’s October-December 2003 special edition:

Indeed, Asia’s cities have more in common with each other today than with the hinterlands in their own countries. All are under pressure from relentless rural-urban migration. All, it would seem, stand to benefit from open borders and free trade needed to attract foreign investment and create jobs. Many are taxed disproportionately to subsidize poorer parts of their countries, often to support failed industries or non-competitive agricultural policies. Cities are home to the intellectual elite, the technically advanced and the worldly: groups that draw their ideas, their science and their fashion from abroad.

For anyone interested in the Asian urban scene, this issue of Newsweek and the Sarai Reader 02 are recommended reading.
